This facility is currently under development and only enabled within selected builds. Depending on development and test schedules we hope to enable this option for all Windows builds in UPDD release 4.1.2, followed by Linux and Mac OS X in future releases. This facility is documented here for the beta test users and for future reference once on general release.

Define, configure and calibrate touch toolbars.  A toolbar is an area on the touch screen that acts independently from the main calibrated video area, as shown below:

A toolbar can simply be used to mask off areas of the calibrated video area or they can be used to trigger an event. A toolbar event can be associated with a UPDD Toolbar function or functions written in external applications. Each toolbar can have any number of cells. The cursor does not move from its current position when a toolbar is touched so toolbars can also be used to mask off areas of the main display calibrated area if required.

UPDD Toolbar Functions, which are tailored to individual operating systems, can be used to invoke UPDD utility (such us on-screen annotation), generate virtual keys, invoke applications, to playback macros (recorded keystrokes and mouse usage), to rotate the display area, to display on-screen keyboards etc.

Toolbars can be positioned anywhere on a touch screen as suits requirements.  Toolbars that reside outside the main touchscreen / video display area are normally referred to as the touch surround area. Toolbars cells that reside within the video display area can also have a bitmap displayed (Windows only at time of writing) within the cell to cater for an on-screen visual reference. Bitmaps can also be associated to toggled or touched cell states so there can be visual feedback on cell activation.

Toolbars can be calibrated individually or defined such their position is relative to, and calculated from, the main video calibration area.  More information is available in the UPDD Toolbar document.

Function

Description

Shows current toolbar and allows selection of a different toolbar if more than one defined.

Visual image of toolbar layout. Restricted to a maximum of 32 cells. Yellow indicates current cell.

Shows number and position of current cell.

Shows action associated with current cell. In this example, touching the toolbar cell will invoke the start menu in a Windows system.

Add a toolbar.

Remove selected toolbar.

Calibrate toolbar.

Used to change number of cells in a toolbar and to indicate if a toolbar is relative to the primary display area (does not require to be separately calibrated as its position is calculated automatically based on the main display calibration), follows rotate (the position of the toolbar is locked to the video display rather than locked to fixed position on the pointer device) or Dragable (can be moved by touching the toolbar for a short period of time).
